”消えてはいけない美しいもの” 〜ANATOMICA BY SEBAGO

“Beautiful Things That Should Never Disappear” — ANATOMICA BY SEBAGO

At the time, when I was running HEMISPHERES, I fondly remembered the first pair of SEBAGO loafers I bought in Geneva, Switzerland, when I was a teenager (early 1960s).

Over the years, the shape of those shoes had changed considerably. And my dream was to revive the design I used to wear.

In the 1980s, I thought, "It's time to really make a move," and I approached my business partner about it, persuading him persistently.

During a business trip to America, we hopped on a small plane for four and visited SEBAGO in Maine.

The president was waiting for us at the factory.

"You want to revive that model? But why?
They're all boxed up in the basement.
Even the shoe lasts for that model."

He didn't understand its value. But we didn't give up. And finally, he relented.

"Alright. But on the condition that you make 1,500 pairs."

We accepted the condition. But we also made a mistake.
We offered them in four colors: burgundy, khaki, black, and navy. We really should have limited it to about two colors.

Still, we eventually managed to sell them all.

Jacques Chirac even bought a pair. He had previously studied in America (Harvard Summer School) and had a nostalgia for 1950s America.

Four years later, he came back to buy another pair. But, of course, there were none left.

They were all gone.

Another beautiful thing disappeared.

Watching beautiful things disappear has become a daily occurrence.

*Jacques Chirac, later President of France (1995-2007)

This is an excerpt from an article Pierre himself wrote in a French magazine.

After approximately 40 years, ANATOMICA is bringing back these SEBAGO shoes once again.

This is Pierre Fournier's own memory, his longing for a lost America, and

"Beautiful things that must not disappear"

It is the embodiment of his persistence.
