WAKOUWA Kyoto limited edition color "KATSURA BLUE" has arrived, inspired by the checkered blue pattern found at Katsura Imperial Villa, an iconic architectural masterpiece in Kyoto.

It is a well-known story that Gropius, the founder of Bauhaus, visited Katsura Imperial Villa during his visit to Japan in the 1950s. He was deeply impressed by it as the ultimate modernism, and it influenced his later works, a story that continues to be told through generations.

Pierre Fournier, the representative of ANATOMICA, also visited Katsura Imperial Villa in March 2024, before the opening of ANATOMICA Kyoto, during a meeting for interior design. He was deeply impressed by how rooms were constructed using tatami mats (Japanese flooring) as a modular standard, and by the highly modern and innovative indigo and white checkered pattern used on the fusuma (sliding doors) of the Shokin-tei teahouse, the most prestigious teahouse within Katsura Imperial Villa, which had already achieved such perfection in 17th-century Japanese architecture.

The WAKOUWA sneakers, with their standardized (modular), functional, and universal design, found common ground with the functional beauty of Katsura Imperial Villa—the "geometric beauty stripped of ornamentation" that Gropius ascribed to it—and thus became the product it is today.

The WAKOUWA Kyoto limited edition color features a deep blue canvas upper. While this model typically uses a black sole, this time a navy-like blue sole is used to match the upper.
